Minister of Justice, Hellenic Republic
Kostas Tsiaras was born in Karditsa in 1966. He is a Doctor, Microbiologist-Biopathologist, he has a PhD from Athens University Medical School, and post-graduate studies in vitro fertilization at Swedish University Centers.
Kostas Tsiaras served as President of Karditsa’s Primary Health Care Workers Association (1992-1993). He is also a member of several scientific associations: founding member of the Karditsa Institute of Research and founder of Karditsa’s Greek-American Friendship Association. He served as a member of the Democratic Renewal Vanguard (DAP), President of the Karditsa New Democracy Local Committee (1991-1994) and at the same time as “Head of Quality of Life issues” on Karditsa Prefectural Committee.
In 2004 he was elected for the first time, as Member of the Parliament, with New Democracy Party, in Karditsa. During his first term as MP, he headed the Health and Social Solidarity section. He served in the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Affairs, the Sub-committee for the study and confrontation of narcotics, as well as the Greek Parliamentary Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Co-operation (PABSEC) for co-operation amongst the countries of the Black Sea Region. In January 2011, the New Democracy Party, appointed him as the Alternate Head of New Democracy’s Political Responsibility section for Citizen Protection. In February 2012 he was appointed as New Democracy’s Agriculture Secretary.
He was Deputy Foreign Minister from July 2012 to June 2013.From July 2013 to December 2014 he was Chairman of Hellenic Parliament’s Standing Committee on Defense and Foreign Affairs.In January 2016 he was elected as General Secretary of the Parliamentary Group of New Democracy.Since July 2019 he serves as Minister of Justice, for the Government of New Democracy.
He is married to Aggeliki Stergiouli, molecular biologist, and they have a son and two daughters.He speaks English, French and German, and knows Russian and Italian.
